Mt. Moiwa, in the lush green mountains of southwest Sapporo, is considered an oasis - an escape from the bustle of the city, easily accessible by ropeway - making it a highly popular destination for both tourists and residents. Once again this year we present to you the PMF Mt. Moiwa Concert, an annual concert in the Forest Gallery near the mountain's peak. The 3 ensembles are comprised of 10 young musicians from 8 countries and regions, all of whom met for the first time at PMF. Their hard work at crafting their respective ensembles' sounds in the limited time available to them bore impressive results, with subtle nuance and great beauty on display.

Beethoven's gracefully melodic Opus 87 trio is perhaps more well known as a piece for 2 oboes and English horn, though the version presented here, for 2 violins and viola, is thought to be Beethoven's own arrangement. Late German Romanticist Max Reger left a large body of chamber music that is still being explored. His Opus 141a Serenade for flute and strings, completed near the end of his life, subtly entwines melodic lines and moves through various keys with great sophistication, while maintaining a lightness that recalls both Beethoven and Mozart - two of his biggest influences. And Mozart's String Quartet No. 17, among the most well-known works in the genre, is a model of perfection, unfailingly inviting and engaging, with moments of breathtaking beauty. The quartet bears the nickname "Hunt," in apparent reference to the opening motif sounding similar to a hunting horn motif (the nickname is not from Mozart). It is perhaps the brightest of his set of 6 quartets dedicated to Haydn, into which Mozart poured an unusual amount of time and energy, aspiring to gain the approval of their dedicatee.

The Pacific Music Festival (PMF) is an international educational music festival founded in Sapporo in 1990 by leading 20th century conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Now a quarter century on, a cumulative total of over 3,500 excellent musicians have taken part.
The heart of PMF is the PMF Academy, an educational program featuring top musicians of the world as faculty, and fostering young musicians chosen through auditions from all parts of the globe. For roughly 1 month each July, these richly talented Academy members receive instruction on high-level craft from the faculty as well as a wealth of experience, in addition to experiencing international exchange through music, thereby deepening international mutual understanding.
